Some universities and research institutions (e.g., UNAM, http://www.unam.mx/), professional associations (e.g., Academia Mexicana de Ciencias, http://www.amc.unam.mx/) and the Foreign Affairs Secretariat of the Federal Government  (http://servicios.sre.gob.mx/becas/) also provide opportunities or information on this topic.

12.         Comments on the trends in polymer science:

@

There are different efforts to increase activities and encourage interaction between Mexican scientist in the field of polymer science and technology. The most important is the meeting organized annually by the Mexican Polymer Society where approximately 130-150 papers are presented each year (www.sopome.org.mx). The Mexican Academy on Materials has a section on Polymers where about 70-90 papers are presented each year along with other of international speakers (http://www.imrc2006.buap.mx/ : New Trends in Polymer Chemistry and Characterization). The Mexican Chemistry Society has also a section on Polymer animated by scientist of the National University (UNAM). Some other groups organize meetings; For example, the group of scientist working in the Controlled polymerizations had a meeting in 2004 and plan to meet this year. The SPM also promoted interactions between the petrochemical sector (polyolefins) and scientists of academic institutions. In September 2005, 15 scientists invited by the SPM meet with the National Petrochemical company to make an analysis of this sector. Important collaborations are being developed today. The Materials Institute (IIM) belonging to the UNAM organizes also an important meeting called Polimex (http://www.iimatercu.unam.mx/huatulco/).Some other meetings related with plastics with an technological emphasis are held in Mexico, for instance, entrepreneurs meet at Platimagen annually (http://www.plastimagen.com.mx/) The activity on polymers is intense but the proximity of the US move some Mexican scientist towards the expositions and scientific organizations outside. Is difficult to establish what is the tendency of the Mexican scientific group however, the by the number of contributions, the field of polymer synthesis is the most favored. In the last years some chemistry focus teams have moved to nanoscience contributing with physicians, biologists, etc. In this multidisciplinary environment activity seems to be more competitive.
